Book Review: The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair by Joel Dicker
The problems we get ourselves into….
Harry had an affair with a 15 year old girl who ended up dead. A bestselling author and esteemed professor he ends up in jail on a murder charge.
His student and our narrator, Marcus, has a huge hit then can't write anymore. Will he sell out his mentor to get a bestselling book?
Dicker is a French hit author and this book has sold over a million copies in Europe. It will be made into a movie. For no logical reason it reminds me of Norman Mailer (the macho, male perspective, intellectual but manly, east coast, young girls).
On the plus side Dicker can tell a story and keeps the pace moving at a great speed. I got caught up. If only he could have researched US law a little. The story is so implausible and incongruent with how our system works, I did have more than a few of my "oh come on" moments which detracts from an otherwise great story.
Worth it? Sure.
Will it sell? Absolutely. Such a feel to the book…you get caught up...
